From the Museum's History

The idea of establishing a museum at Bojnice Castle had already been considered by its last owner, Count Ján František Pálfi (Pálffy). In his will dated November 14, 1907, he expressed the wish that his palaces in Vienna and Budapest, the manor house in Kráľová, and the castle in Bojnice be opened to the public, that the works of art remain in their original locations, and that tours be made available to all interested visitors.

The first local history exhibition was installed at Bojnice Castle in 1941 thanks to the efforts of members of the Upper Nitra Museum Association. It remained there until the great fire at the castle on May 9, 1950. The day after the fire, proposals were drawn up to secure funding for repairs and to use the restored building as a museum. The Council of the Regional National Committee in Nitra, by Resolution No. 107/1950 of September 7, decided to establish the Nitra Regional Museum with its seat at Bojnice Castle. Following the territorial reorganization in 1960, the museum ceased to function as a regional institution and became a regional center focused on the research and documentation of Upper Nitra. Within the new network of museums in the Central Slovakia Region, it assumed the role of a local history museum for the Prievidza district.
