Červený Kameň Castle was built after 1241 as one of many castles constructed as part of a systematic campaign to build stone castles supported by both King Béla IV and the local nobility, and it became part of a network of border castles stretching from Devín to Strečno. During the Middle Ages, the Hungarian nobility received it as a gift for providing military or economic assistance to the monarch. Many nobles took turns residing here. The most famous among them were Matúš Čák of Trenčín, the Wolfurts, the Zápoľskys, and the Turzovs. However, all these families took turns here at relatively short intervals, so the most significant ones are those families that “exchanged” Červený Kameň during the 16th century. In the first half of the 16th century, it was the Fuggers who gradually demolished the Gothic castle and built a Renaissance fortress in its place to store the raw materials they traded in. However, their commercial position in Hungary gradually weakened during the 16th century, and so they decided to sell it in the second half of the 16th century. The new owner was Mikuláš II Pálffy, who married Mária Magdaléna Fugger, and part of the estate came to him as her dowry. From 1588 onward, Mikuláš and Mária were the sole owners of the estate and the castle, and their intention was to establish a stately residence for the family here. The Pálffys retained the property until 1945, when they fled to Austria to escape the advancing Soviet army. In 1949, the castle was declared a national cultural heritage site. A museum was established here, dedicated to documenting the development of the nobility’s residential culture from the 16th to the early 20th century and the evolution of military technology at Slovak castles.
